Sitavig is a prescription antiviral medication used for the treatment of cold sores.Cold soresare another term for "oral herpes," a long-term infection of the mouth with the herpes simplex virus. Symptoms can include soreness, burning sensation, redness, ulcers, rashes, blisters, and tingling. Symptoms of oral herpes usually go away on their own but in some cases, may need treatment. Sitavig is an antiviral that works by incorporating into viral DNA to prevent the replication of viral particles. By preventing replication, the virus does not spread to healthy tissue, and symptoms will resolve more quickly. Sitavig will not cure oral herpes but treats the symptoms. Oral herpes is a long-term infection that is kept suppressed by the immune system.
