Rowasa Enema (Mesalamine)

  • Follow the instructions on the label of your prescription. Read the package insert that comes with your prescription. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have. Rowasa Rectal Suspension Enema is available in disposable bottles that are wrapped in foil trays. Insert one Rowasa enema rectally one time a day at bedtime. Shake the bottle to ensure that the suspension is mixed thoroughly. Holding the neck of the bottle, take off the applicator tip's protective cover. It is recommended to lie on the left side with the left leg stretched out and the upper right leg flexed forward as this helps with balance. You may use the knee-chest position instead. Gently insert the applicator tip into the rectum. The applicator tip should be pointed toward the navel. Squeeze the bottle steadily to ensure that most of the medication is delivered. Throw away the used bottle. Stay in the same position for 30 minutes or longer. If possible, retain the enema all night. Be sure to drink plenty of liquids during treatment.
