Chemical Name ALBUTEROL (al-BYOO-ter-ole) ProAir HFA is a medication prescribed to treat bothbronchospasmsin reversible obstructive airway disease (asthma) and to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasms. ProAir HFA can be used in patients that are four years of age or older. In patients with asthma and exercise-induced bronchospasms, the lungs constrict and tighten, making it difficult to take a full breath. Albuterol works by attaching to beta-receptors on the surface of smooth muscle cells in the lungs. When albuterol attaches to beta-receptors, it causes the muscles that line lung tissue to relax, making it easier to breathe.
