Maxitrol (Neomycin/Polymyxin/Dexameth)

The active ingredients in MAXITROL are neomycin, polymyxin, and dexamethasone. Neomycin and polymyxin are antibacterial medications. Neomycin works by preventing bacterial cells from replicating. Polymyxin creates holes in bacterial membranes that cause them to leak their contents, killing the bacteria. Dexamethasone is a steroid that works by lowering the activity of the immune system. It reduces swelling, redness, and inflammation. MAXITROL is not known to interact with other medications because it does not absorb into the bloodstream.

Do not touch the tip of the eyedropper to the eye or other non-sterile surfaces. The bottle can become contaminated and cause a secondary infection. Use MAXITROL as directed by the doctor. Using it for longer than prescribed can increase the risk of glaucoma or increased intraocular pressure. Use with caution if you have a history of ocular herpes simplex. Do not wear contact lenses while using MAXITROL.
