Bactroban is a nasal ointment used for the treatment of nasal colonization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It can be used by adults, pediatric patients, and healthcare workers to prevent the spread of MRSA institutional outbreaks in high-risk locations. Bactroban works by binding to bacterial isoleucyl-transfer RNA (tRNA) synthetase. This protein is important for the replication of bacterial cells. At concentrations in this formulation, Bactroban is bactericidal (kills bacterial cells). Bactroban is no longer available in the United States due to supply shortages.
