ACTIGALL (ursodiol) is a prescription medication that can treat and prevent gallstones. The gallbladder is an organ by the liver that helps with digestions. It produces bile, which is a digestive fluid that contains several different enzymes and cholesterol. ACTIGALL works in the liver to reduce the amount of cholesterol that is produced. By reducing the production of cholesterol, bile is less likely to form into stones. Left untreated, gallstones can cause biliary obstruction, leading to pain and digestive problems.   • If taking ACTIGALL for gallstone dissolution, the normal dose is 8-10 mg/kg/day in 2 to 3 divided doses. For gallstone prevention, the normal dose is 300 mg by mouth twice daily.
